Announcing: 2020 Works in Process Resident Artists

CFPA is delighted to announce the three artists selected for our 2020 Works in Process Residency: José A. Luis, Megan Mayer, and Margaret Ogas. With the support of free rehearsal space, a mentor specifically chosen for this project, and a public presentation and audience conversation, these three artists are each moving an existing work (and/or way of working) further down a developmental path. A public presentation of a portion of the artists’ works-in-process will be held at CFPA when public gatherings can commence!

José A. Luis Process

José A. Luis will continue work on “Lunas,” the third part of a series of dance works called, “Chasing Moons.” “Lunas” investigates the act of remembering purposefully, the weight of memory, the embodiment of text, and the paradoxes that emerge from the question: “Can our re-creation of memories manifest an untrue version of ourselves?”

Luis has performed his own dance works in Minneapolis, Chicago, Kalamazoo, and the D.C. area. Often a collaborator with composers, film makers, and fellow dance artists, his works explore memories, wants, places and times which blur dreams with reality. “The Last Strike of Gold”, another piece in his “Chasing Moons” series, was presented at the 2019 Inbox @artbox and “Undertow” was presented at 9×22. Luis earned his BFA in Dance at UW-Milwaukee.

Megan Mayer will further develop her work, “(FW) Redux,” an evening-length dancework that explores some questions: are middle-aged bodies and voices still relevant in the often ageist field of performance? What does a woman directing 3 men get to say about toxic masculinity? What critique and vulnerability can men who don’t subscribe to this toxicity offer about this subject? Can constructing 1980s nostalgia and loathing of that same nostalgia simultaneously be a place to begin dismantling some of these themes?

Mayer is an award-winning artist working with choreography, dance, experimental video and photography. She makes dances using minimalism, mimicry, tenderness, wry humor, loneliness, fake bad timing and exacting musicality. Her dancework has received support from the National Center for Choreography in Akron, OH, the Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography in Tallahassee, FL, Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, Minnesota State Arts Board, Jerome Foundation, Right Here Showcase and the Sage Dance Award. She curated the Walker Art Center’s 2017 Choreographer’s Evening, and was a McKnight Foundation Choreographic Fellow in 2017 & 2010.

Margaret Ogas is working iteratively as she pursues connection and relationship with audience-witnesses in her solo performances. She is experimenting with humor and sarcasm to navigate her experience as a young, mixed-race Chicana woman, through movement, sound and text. Her solo practice questions and rebels against dominant culture representation, presenting an experience of mixed-race femininity that is intentionally personal, nuanced, and silly. Her work is built through investigations of sound, including recordings of her grandmother telling stories, pop culture references, vocal percussion, poetry and academic text. 

Ogas is a proud midwestern Chicana dance artist, hailing from Milwaukee, WI. She has presented her choreography at the Walker Art Center, the Cedar Cultural Center, The Minnesota Museum of American Art, 9×22 Dance Lab, Regis Center for Art, CTUL (Centro de Trabajadores Unidos en Lucha) and in public space on Lake Street for Love East Lake. She has performed with Chris Schlichting, Laurie Van Wieren, and is currently a cast member in Taja Will’s Blood Language. Ogas guest curated Anything But English (2018), a multilingual performance for Patrick’s Cabaret’s final season. An aspiring interdisciplinary artist, she is in the process of completing a muralism apprenticeship with Comunidades Latinas Unidas en Servicio (CLUES). She earned her BFA in Dance at the U of MN.

The Performance Collective hosts artist residencies at CFPA that offer radical openness and rigorous support to local performing artists.

CFPA produces periodic art events, all of which are pay-what-you-can and open to the public.
