The Creative Work:
“Strange Heart Beating”, by Kristin Idaszak, two-time Jerome fellow and Resident Playwright at
Chicago Dramatists.
Synopsis: Teeny and Lena are best friends. They grew up together in a rural Minnesota town, dreaming of leaving for the big cities. But now they’re adults, and Teeny is the town sheriff and Lena is a newly-single mother. When the body of Lena’s daughter is found near the lake outside of town, their friendship is stretched to the breaking point. Part Lake Wobegon detective story, part Shirley Jackson ghost story, STRANGE HEART BEATING is a darkly fantastical look at the rural Midwest, the murky nature of justice, and the prejudices that lie just beneath the surface.

This story contains mature themes and language, and is not appropriate for children under 13.

The ReClaim series supports artists who engage fiercely with the complex and contradictory nature of the human experience. We support audiences who yearn for greater personal engagement between works of art and the daily life of our community. With a focus on artists that reckon with social justice on a human scale, the post-presentation discussions are facilitated by skilled leaders in the creation of art and the seeking of justice.

Free parking available across the street in the Lake Country School lot.
